Creating a virtual world inside a laptop with OpenSimulator
Posted March 30th, 2010 by Liam Green-Hughes
I am alone on a small island that is about the size of a roundabout in the middle of a vast ocean. With my ghostly body I look up at the night sky and contemplate what to do next. Maybe I will make the sun rise, build some more land or just read some more of the wiki. I've just installed OpenSimulator (a.k.a. OpenSim), a "3D Application Server". What this means is that it can be used to host "virtual worlds", a bit like SecondLife. In fact you can use the SecondLife Viewer as a client for it. After hearing about at various points for quite a while and finding a really good set of instructions on how to set it up, I couldn't resist having a go, even though creating virtual worlds is a bit of an excursion for me.

Running SecondLife on an Ubuntu-powered EEE
Posted August 7th, 2008 by Liam Green-Hughes
Back in December 2007 I installed SecondLife on a factory-standard Asus EEE PC to see if it would work or not, it did, even with just 512MB memory installed, but it was a little slow. So since adding a bit of extra power to my EEE by upgrading it to 2GB RAM and installing Ubuntu on it, I was curious to see how this might improve the experience. The SecondLife client has also been updated recently, the version I tested with is version 1.20.15.92456 which I downloaded directly from the SecondLife web site. The results were pleasing, the client was usable, the graphics more vibrant and details than before, as you can see from the picture, even with low graphic detail selected the detail was quite impressive.

Fun with the Asus EEE PC Part 1
Posted December 11th, 2007 by Liam Green-Hughes
I've just had the good fortune to have been able to borrow one of these magnificient little machines for the weekend. For those of you haven't heard the Asus EEE PC is an ultramobile laptop. Think "Honey I shrunk the laptop" and you'll have a good picture of it.

What bad things people do in SecondLife
Posted December 4th, 2007 by Liam Green-HughesFound this list of bad things people get up to in SecondLife:
Second Life | Community: Police Blotter
Offences like "illegal roulette table" and "illegal slot machines" make it on the list along with verbal abuse and harassment and "shooting a Linden". Interesting to see what sort of things go on in a virtual world and what penalties are handed out. Seeing some of the offences though makes me wonder, will you ever get run down no go areas in a virtual world?
